Meet The Author

K. A. Cross presents...

Emy Maldonado

About Emy

Emy Maldonado is a mommy to twin boys whom she loves with all her heart. Everything she does is for them. She was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, but moved to the US when she was only 6 years old. She currently lives in New Jersey where she spends any free moment writing. She loves spending time with her family, reading, writing, baking, listening to the rain, and watching the ocean waves crash.

Want to know more?

1. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I first realized I wanted to be a writer when I was probably in the 8th grade. I first started writing poetry and then I started writing short stories.

2. In what kind of environment do you work best in?

I love to work mostly early in the morning or really late at night when everyone is sleeping. I can write in an absolute silent environment or a rather noisy one. Once I'm in my writing mode,  I definitely get lost in my story.

3. What's your favourite thing about being a writer?

My most favorite thing about being a writer is that it can take me away from reality. I get to create worlds  and characters and I get to decide or control how things will turn out. It's my world.

4. How did you come up with the idea for your latest book?

My latest book, "Two Wrongs Make a Right", really just came to me as I wrote. I had intended it to go one way, but it actually came out differently. Most of my ideas come to me at the strangest times. TWMAR was no different.

5. Do you ever base your characters on people you know?

No. I like to make them up entirely from whatever my mind is picturing. I might take different qualities from different people and roll them into 1 character, but it's never done on purpose and it's just the way I happen to see a particular character in my mind.

6. Do you ever wish that some of your characters were real?

Yes! Of course! Look at Troy from TWMAR... who wouldn't wish a guy like that existed?

7. What do your family and friends think about your book/s?

They're proud of me & what I've written. I'm not sure if they're just biased, but it's been pretty good feedback ;)

8. Do you plan out your books or do you just go with the flow?

I usually plan them out first. Of course, sometimes the story just goes in a totally different direction than I had anticipated.

9. If you could ask a character from any book a question, who would it be and what would you ask?

I would love to visit Noah Calhoun from "The Notebook" and interview him. He's definitely my all-time favorite character. I'd ask him questions that would probably have nothing to do with his story ;)

10. Who is your favourite author?

I can't pick just one, but I will pick my top 2 favorites: Nicholas Sparks & Lili St. Germain

11. What’s your favourite genre?

Romance, Mystery, Thriller, & Erotica

12. What’s next for you?

I'm working on a series, but that's all I'm going to say for now ;)

13. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Don't give up! I never thought my dream of becoming a writer would come true, but thankfully, it has! Just keep following your dreams & write, write, WRITE!

14. What’s your favourite movie?

Again, I can't pick just one! I love "A Nightmare on Elm Street" & "The Notebook"

15. If you were stranded on an island which three items could you not live with out?

My cell phone (with hopefully never ending battery  power), my laptop (again with a never ending battery), and my journal.

16. If you could be born in another time when would you choose and why?

Well, I'm glad to be living in this day & time, so I wouldn't change it, but I would love to visit the 1700's for just one day, dress up in one of those gorgeous dresses and attend a ball.

17. If you wrote an autobiography about yourself what would you call it?

When it comes to talking about myself, I'm not too creative, lol. How about just "The Life of Emy Maldonado"? LOL.

18. What your guilty pleasure?

Chocolate! Lots and lots of chocolate!!!

19. What’s your favourite season and why?

Autumn. I love the colors and the cool breeze in the air.

20. Do you have a nickname?

Emy is my nickname ;)

21. How do you handle writers block?

I usually take a break or write something else. Then I go back after a while.

22. What’s your favourite writing snack/ drink?

Coffee. I love writing with a hot cup of coffee.

23. How do you cope with distractions?

I just remove myself from the situation. I don't typically get distracted once I'm in my writing mode though.

24. What would be your ideal holiday?

I love Christmas - the togetherness of my family & seeing my kids' faces when they open their presents. Seeing them so happy makes my whole life worthwhile.

25. If you weren’t a writer what would your dream job be?

I love music so definitely something with music.

26. Sweet or sour?

Sweet. I have a terrible sweet tooth!

27. What three words best describe you?

Shy, loyal, honest.

28. What your fondest childhood memory?

My grandparents play a huge part of my childhood. Any time I spent with them means so much to me. Most of my childhood memories involve my grandparents.

29. Would you prefer a quiet night in or a night on the town?

Quiet night in. If I'm not writing or reading, I love curling up on the couch watching a good movie.

30. What has been the best day of your life so far?

December 15, 2011 - when I became a mother to my twin boys.

31. If you could go back in time what one piece of advice would you give yourself?

There is more out there for you, keep going.

32. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Hmmm. I'm actually a really mellow person. I don't consider myself too daring, so I don't believe I've done anything that qualifies as crazy. Sorry guys.

33. Do you believe in fate?

Absolutely.

34. If you could be any animal in the world what would you be and why?

A butterfly. Beautiful & free.

35. What was the last thing that made you cry?

Tears of joy - my kids.

36. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?

I'd love to either be able to stop time or to alter the way things happen. Guess that's why I'm a writer... I get to control that in my stories ;)

37. If you only had one more day to live how would you spend it?

Definitely with my boys - always.

38. For many of us writing is not our full time job, what is yours?

I wish I had more time to write. But yes, I do have a full-time job. I work for a copier company and have a few different roles.

Two Wrongs Make A Right

Allison Jefferson was tired of her life. Tired of the everyday routines, tired of the same old boring life she led with her husband, Nick. Their son, Joey, was the only thing that kept her going along with the marriage. When she met wealthy, gorgeous, and incredibly established Troy Robertson, Allie's ordinary, little world was quickly thrown upside down! Allie falls hard for Troy - so hard in fact, that she begins spinning a web of lies to her husband so that she can engage in dangerous waters with Troy. One day, Allie realizes she no longer wants what she is involved in and decides to let Troy be, but it is too late. Can a story involving a wife, a husband, a lover, and a sister find a way to survive the drama and despair?

Meet The Author

K. A. Cross presents...

Lauren Hogue

About Lauren

Lauren Hogue is a doting wife, a mother of two tomboy princesses, and an aspiring author. Her life has always been absorbed in the books she read, fantasizing about what life would be like as one of her favorite characters. Though she isn't working full time as an author, every spare second is spent researching, writing, and editing to become the best author she can be!

Want to know more?

1. Do you ever base your characters on people you know?

Surprisingly, yes. But I think all writers do to some degree. I, myself, just take bits and pieces of people I know and add them to the characters in my stories. For instance-- a personality quirk, a phrase they often use, or sometimes a physical that stands out to me, will be put mashed into one of my characters, making them more life-like and real to me. Just don’t ask me for the real people I base them off of, that’s a secret.

2. What do your friends and family think of your books?

So far I’ve gotten positive feed-back from them all but since I’m a realist; I have a hard time believing it to be true. I have this underlying feeling that they have to say they like my work.

3. Do you plan out your books or just go with the flow?

Ha! This one is and always will be tough for me because I’m such a “planner.” I always start my work with some kind of foundation but then life gets in the way, or I just can’t seem to make ends meet in my story, or I just get bored with my “plan” and I end up going way off track. To date, none of my books have started or ended the way I originally wanted them to but hey, it always works out beautifully in the end.

4. What’s your favorite genre?

I think it changes with time and seasons. Obviously right now, my favorite is YA but if you’d asked me five years ago I would have said the Classics, and even further back at ten years ago I would have said Children’s Lit, specifically anything with magic and wonder.

5. What’s next for you?

Well, I’m currently working on the second book in the Protectors series and still have at least one more to write in that series before I wrap it up. I’ve also started another series that is a little more dark and serious, dealing with Sex trafficking industry the US. I want my writing to bring awareness, to spark conversation (and hopefully action), and to ultimately connect with people. On the lighter side, my eldest daughter has asked that I write a children’s story for her to read.

6. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

When you sit down to write, don’t worry about grammar or editing, just write! Speak it out loud if you need to, listen to the melody of the words, and the rest will come naturally. Oh and read as much as possible, whenever you can. You can only better your writing if you push yourself to read other’s.

7. What’s your favorite movie?

I had to answer this question because my daughter has been asking me this for the past two days. Is it ok to say more than one? Ok, good. Here they are in no particular order. The Hunger Games(all of them) Pride and Prejudice (with Kiera Knightley), LOTR trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, Pitch Perfect, Wreck-It-Ralph, Brave, God’s Not Dead, all of the Narnia movies….this list just keeps going. I really am a big movie buff.

8. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Eating cake or chocolate or cookies for breakfast. I justify it with, “Oh, I have all day to work off those calories,” yet that hardly ever happens…I hate working out.

9. What’s your favorite season and why?

Hands down, I’d have to say Spring. When I was a teenager, I lived in the upstairs bedroom of our house and every morning I would wake up to the sun shining through my window and the sound of the birds chirping from the branches that surrounded it. It was the most peaceful, beautiful way to wake up and it only happened in the spring and early summer. I love the soft greens of sprouting grass and budding leaves, I love the sweet, whistling language of the birds, and I love not sweating to death at eleven in the morning.

10.  Do you have a nickname?

All of the (adult) family members on my husband’s side have a nickname that the children call us by. Mine happens to be Aunt Ren, ergo I go by Ren, or LauRen, or RensPen on twitter.

11. How do you handle writer’s block?

I do a lot of fist pounding to the forehead and numbly staring ahead at nothing. But the thing that’s worked the best for me is taking a break from that particular story, stepping away from it all together. The ideas will come when you least expect it, like when you’re working or sleeping.

12. What’s your favorite writing snack or drink?

I usually have a creamy, sweet cup of coffee sitting next to my laptop while I’m writing.

13. How do you cope with distractions?

Since I’m a mother of two, I deal with distractions all the time. The best method for me is to seclude myself in a quiet room (sometimes it’s the bathroom) and to have a set schedule that my kids are accustomed to. That way they know, from such and such time, mommy will be writing. Other than that, I try to avoid distractions so that I can focus on my writing. People talking doesn’t bother me, so I can sit in a public place and write, but if the TV  is on, I find my eyes sneaking over to the screen every few seconds or so—that’s something I avoid. Screens.

14. If you weren’t a writer, what would your dream job be?

I LOVE to travel, so any job that had me exploring the world (safely) would be my dream job.

15. If you could go back in time what one piece of advice would you give yourself?

Relax! Everything’s going to be fine, enjoy your time RIGHT NOW.

16. Do you believe in fate?

I believe in God. I know that’s not the same, but knowing in my heart that He holds my life in His hands, that He’s constantly watching over me and my family, and that He knows exactly where we’re heading is what “fate” means to me.

17. What was the last thing that made you cry?

Fear.

18. For many of us, writing is not a full time job. What is yours?

I’m a licensed Cosmetologist, so I get the happy pleasure of making women feel beautiful all day long. It’s very rewarding.

Bound To The Ground

Waking up, sweating and shaking, from a nightmare, being kept awake by the incessant pounding of one terrifying thought after another was bad enough, but realizing the next morning that her dream was going to come true--well, that’s just the beginning of LEAH’S story.

Normally Leah Hawthorne’s premonitions allow her to see the things that she needs to correct or fix but when her latest one shows her risking her life to save herself, and possibly her whole apartment building from an intruder, her older brother and guardian, JOHN, freaks out. Leah, feeling trapped by John’s new rules, reaches out to the Protectors—a group of earthbound angels who share her gift of seeing into the future and use it to guard the human race from the demonic army. Leah’s rebellious action to join the Protectors not only causes strife between her and John but puts her directly in the war path of the high commander of the demon army, DONOVAN.

When Leah’s first mission as a Protector ends with John being kidnapped and held as leverage by Donovan, she turns her back on the Protectors and sets out on her own to right the wrongs that she’s made and get her brother back.

Meet The Author

K. A. Cross presents...

S. Nicole Johnson

About Stephany

Stephany has always loved to read and write. She can spend a whole day with a book and be completely happy. She thoroughly enjoys getting lost in books and tends to get so into them she forgets about everything around her. She is definitely one of those people who throws books when something horrible happens to her favorite character and then of course has to finish it even if she's angry.

She used to write a little when she was younger, but she really began to get into it while she was going to school and her husband was in Afghanistan. She wrote mostly as a hobby, a way to relieve stress after long days. After a few months, it turned into more and now it is a part of her daily routine.

Her only hope is that her stories are enjoyed as much as she enjoyed writing them.

Want to know more?

1. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

I've always liked writing, but I really got into it when my husband went to Afghanistan in 2013. It was then that I really go into writing, as a way to relax.

2. In what kind of environment do you work best in?

It really depends on what I'm writing. If it's a fight scene I like to listen to rock music so I can feel as pumped up as my characters. Most other times I just need some sort of background noise.

3. What's your favourite thing about being a writer?

I have an extremely over active imagination and I love being able to bring it life.

4. How did you come up with the idea for your latest book?

I was sitting around in my garage with my two best friends and between the three of us we came up with it. We were pretty proud of ourselves, our heads only grew bigger when it got published.

5. Do you ever base your characters on people you know?

I don't think you can avoid it. My brain tries to come up with original characters with personalities all their own, but when you're surrounded by friends and family with such strong personalities, it's hard not to slip them in there. I like it though, I like sharing my real world with my fiction world.

6. Do you ever wish that some of your characters were real?

To me, my characters are already real. So I think it would be awesome if some of their traits could be real, like changing into a wolf or having some other supernatural ability.

7. What do your family and friends think about your book/s?

My friends love my writing, they were the ones who pushed me to try to get my work published. My family didn't know much about my writing until it was published, but they enjoy it also.

8. Do you plan out your books or do you just go with the flow?

I usually plan the ending and work out that. I always know how it's going to end, it's everything in-between that surprises me.

9. Who is your favourite author?

James Patterson

10. What’s your favourite genre?

I don't know if I have a favorite. I'll read just about anything if it's done well.

11. What’s next for you?

My second book was just released and now I need to buckle down and get to work on the third book in The Guardian series.

12. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

When you can't write, read. I find that reading sometimes opens up my mind when it's blocked.

13. What’s your favourite movie?

Fired Up

14.  What your guilty pleasure?

Netflix

15. What’s your favourite season and why?

Summer. I absolutely love being outside and I hate being cold. I feel like possibilities are endless during the summer.

16. Do you have a nickname?

Sadly no, but I should probably get one.

17. How do you handle writers block?

I read. I either re-read what I have written, or I read something completely unrelated to what I'm writing to clear my mind out.

18.  What’s your favourite writing snack/ drink?

Diet Mt. Dew and Jelly beans. It's a sick obsession.

19. How do you cope with distractions?

Not well. I'm easily distracted and I usually allow myself to be.

20. What would be your ideal holiday?

Camping at a lake with a fast boat, big tubes, and lots of friends.

21. Sweet or sour?

Sweet

22. What three words best describe you?

Sarcastic, dedicated, loyal

23. What has been the best day of your life so far?

I think it's a toss up between the day I got married and the day my son was born.

24. Do you believe in fate?

Yes

The Guardians: Earth
Werewolves are gorgeous model like men that turn into majestic wolves. Vampires can control themselves so that they can be with a human without drinking from them. Fairies are cute little winged creatures that fly around and do sweet things. Witches are one with nature and they can do amazing things with their magic. Demons stay in Hell.
Um, No.
Werewolves are mean vicious things that turn every full moon and kill at least one person, and that’s on a slow night. Vampires can’t control themselves for shit, they eat everything from animal to humans, and nothing can change that. Fairies are mean, chaos creating punks that enjoy other’s pain. Witches can be decent, but if they tap into the wrong power they can really ruin your day. Demons walk the earth. Everything you thought you knew is so wrong, luckily, the world has us to keep it all in check. We are The Guardians.

Meet The Author

K. A. Cross presents...

Marni MacRae

About Marni

Marni was born in the south and proceeded to skip about the states for a few decades before settling in the beautiful Northwest. Having grown up listening to her mother weave magical tales for her entertainment, Marni always dreamed one day of being a storyteller herself. Now at 41, she lives on a small farm, happily married to the love of her life. When she is not mucking out stalls or milking goats, she is chasing one of her six sons around or stealing a moment to hammer at the keyboard.

Want to know more?

1.      When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer?

When I was ten.  My mother would weave tales off the top of her head to entertain me on long drives.  I was always so amazed that she could just make up stories!  I soon began creating my own adventures and began scribbling them down.

2.      In what kind of environment do you work best in?

Well I have 7 children, 6 of which are boys!  I was raised in a large family and learned early to block out my surroundings to read or study.  My children call it my super power.  I can focus on one thing extremely well.  Of course this has it's downsides too, I once set my kitchen on fire while writing Lady Sun, too much focusing on the book and not enough multi-tasking skills!

3.      What's your favourite thing about being a writer?

Meeting my characters!  I begin thinking I have them all figured out, but as they grow and evolve they surprise me.  I always find it astonishing.

4.      How did you come up with the idea for your latest book?

For Lady Sun I was actually trapped in my home in the middle of winter.  I was truly longing for a deserted island!  I began writing it to let off steam and escape vicariously through Sophia.  It quickly evolved and ended up writing it's self :)

5.      Do you ever base your characters on people you know?

Oh yes, My dreamy husband is always the foundation for my Heroes, and periphereal characters can sometimes be colorful people from my own life.  It helps me to draw on the emotional connection I have to the real people and embue those feelings or characteristics into the characters on the page.

6.      Do you ever wish that some of your characters were real?

Not so far.  My hero is my husband, so I don't think I could write a man who could compete with his awesomeness, however I would like to meet Sophia, we would get along great :)  My current book has a girl in it I would be interested in befriending as well :)

7.      What do your family and friends think about your book/s?

Oh my mom is over the moon.  She brags, I love it.  My sister is really supportive as well.  Oddly though the rest of my family pretends like they don't know I write! My friends are the greatest, they push my book on everyone they meet.  Sweethearts one and all.

8.      Do you plan out your books or do you just go with the flow?

I go with the flow.  I am a research nut so there is A LOT of reading and research and I am one for being accurate in detail, but every time I try to guide the story it just does what it wants to.  Less frustration if I just let it have it's way :)

9.      If you could ask a character from any book a question, who would it be and what would you ask?

I was really effected by My sisters keeper by Jodi Piccoult, I think I would ask the mother (can't remember her name) what she was thinking?  I have many children and it is a balance, I just can't see hurting one for another...it's a tough spot and very visceral, that motherly instinct, but I was stricken by the value placed on her daughters.  Yeah, I would need a few questions answered :)

10.     Who is your favourite author?

Oh man, you want me to choose? Well, I change as my moods hit, sometimes I need romance or fantasy and which ever author feeds my fix is the greatest for the day, but right now I will say Hugh Howey.  That man can write!  His structure and content and mind blowing imagination is so far un-paralleled for me.

11.     What’s your favourite genre?

Nope, can't choose this one.  I was a fantasy nut for years, then got sucked into romance land, and then thrillers.  I love all stories, I grew up on the classic fables and Laura Ingals Wilder and presidential biographies.  I will consume any written word.  I have been known to lose days inside Wikipedia.  So no favorite, just a love of writing well done.

12.     What’s next for you?

I am in the middle of a novel called Nameless. It is a great writing experience as it stretches my abilities to convey information with many limitations.  I am excited to see how it turns out!

13.     What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Don't give up.  Don't ever let someone tell you you can't.  If someone does tell you you can't, question that relationship.  It is hard, but it is also rewarding and it is doable.  Research, push, never stop trying. Most failures are the lack of believing you have what it takes. If you can finish a book, and go through the effort to publish and put it in front of millions of readers to judge indiscriminately, then you have the moxie it takes to do just about anything.

14.     What’s your favourite movie?

Princess Bride (don't tell anyone!)  No wait, Shawshank redemption. Or all of the Lord of the rings.  Oh come on, I clearly am terrible at choosing.  I want them all :)

15.     If you were stranded on an island which three items could you not live with out?

I had to ask myself this writing Lady Sun!  If I can't choose people, I would choose flint and steel, a knife and a pot.  Boring yes, but I would be way happier with a fire, while my fish cooks and clean water to drink than if I had a library or a feather bed and no food water or fire.  The realist in me beat up the romantic dreamer :)

16.     If you could be born in another time when would you choose and why?

I would say two hundred years ago, give or take a decade.  Because here in America there were more opportunities for land, for growth, less restrictions on freedom (strange but true, not including slavery, which of course was horrid) and there was space, so much space!  Plus if I said anything different my husband wouldn't go with me :)

17.     If you wrote an autobiography about yourself what would you call it?

Tell All.  or Tell Most. :)

18.     What your guilty pleasure?

Dr. Who.  My oldest son sucked me in and I can't miss and episode :)

19.     What’s your favourite season and why?

Spring!  Wel We live on a farm, so little babies are being born, in fact, my Mustang mare is expecting to foal any second!  Also, I love the promise of warmth before the temps hit 90's and everything is so green!

20.     Do you have a nickname?

Nope, don't anyone start now either!  I like my name, and so I am happy to hear it.  My hubby calls me Tigerlily, not sure if that counts :)

21.     How do you handle writers block?

I haven't had that problem so far!  When I get stuck on a direction usually I talk at my kids or my husband and they let me work it out.

22.     What’s your favourite writing snack/ drink?

Coffee, Dr. Pepper and Zingers!

23.     How do you cope with distractions?

If it's my children, I stop and go play with them.  If it's animals, I stop and go feed them, If it's my husband I stop and, um... well, go play with him :)  Writing is great, but far from my top priority.  Life comes first.

24.     What would be your ideal holiday?

Scotland.  My mother lived in Edinburgh before she was married.  I have always wanted to go see where my ancestors lived,  The MacRae's have a tie to Eilean Donan, so that would be my first stop!

25.     If you weren’t a writer what would your dream job be?

Mother. Done!

26.     Sweet or sour?

Both!  if you mean food, if you mean my attitude, then Both! You keep trying to sneak in choices!  I will take all please :)

27.     What three words best describe you?

Oh wow, you may have to ask a friend or freinemy for that one, but I will be honest.  Honest.  Bossy. Loving. Wow, that didn't even hurt :)

28.     What your fondest childhood memory?

Road trips with my mom.  We would sing and eat crap food (donuts and pie and chocolate milk) and she always stopped to see neat things along the way, and of course the stories.  She told the best stories!

29.     Would you prefer a quiet night in or a night on the town?

Oh in my twenties I would say out on the town, but now, staying in with my family is the best.

30.     What has been the best day of your life so far?

I can't tell you.  You would be embarrassed, but my second best day was the day I married my husband, everything wonderful blossomed from that.

31.     If you could go back in time what one piece of advice would you give yourself?

Don't break.  I would tell myself to skinnydip more, to be more discerning, to call my brother, and to not take life too seriously.

32.     What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

I don't think your blog could take it!  I will say that hitchhiking across three states at 16 was probably the stupidist.  Does that count?

33.     Do you believe in fate?

Yep, I do.  And angels and God and Unicorns.  Seriously. I believe God has a plan, that I was fated for my destiny, that I still have free choice as I travel this road, that angels have my back and that unicorns once roamed the earth.

34.     If you could be any animal in the world what would you be and why?

Bigfoot.  Can you imagine the publicity!

35.     What was the last thing that made you cry?

A commercial last night.  I am  a sucker.  I cry at the drop of a hat.  The last thing that really made me cry was the death of my brother.

36.     If you could have any super power what would it be and why?

Invisibility.  So I could sneak on a plane and travel the world!

37.     If you only had one more day to live how would you spend it?

Making love.  Lots and lots of love.

38.     For many of us writing is not our full time job, what is yours?

Life is my full time job.  I am a mother, and a farmer and a wife and a sister, daughter friend, I am a mediator a trouble maker a chef and a housekeeper.  Life pays me well, I will never quit, so far my bonuses have been great. :)

There she meets Lucas, a fellow vacationer. Tall, dark, and handsome, Lucas is a cowboy, misplaced in the tropics.
Shunning Sophia’s attempt at friendship, Lucas keeps to himself until the two travelers are thrust into an unwelcome adventure.
Sophia soon learns that Lucas may be her only hope for survival, and that paradise is not so easily reached.
